"Isaac Harnett Dies from his injuries On Tuesday, Sept 25th, Isaac Harnett of Strathroy was fatally injured by a fall from a scaffold in Lobo Twp. Contractor Thomas D. Hill, of this town, for whom Mr. Harnett was working, was engaged with his employees on Isaac Zavitz's residence. Mr. Harnett had built the scaffold, carried brick up and was in the act of walking over it with a load of mortar on his shoulder when the ledger broke, precipitating him a distance of eighteen feet to the ground. His back was badly hurt and bruises were manifest over the eye. The shoulder bone was also broken. After being extricated, the injured man was brought to his home in Strathroy, where Drs. Henderson and Hoare rendered him all possible assistance. The patient continued to complain of his back, across which there appeared a mark as though a board had fallen upon him after he was down. He died at 1:30 P.M. on Saturday after great suffering. The funeral was held from the family residence, Metcalfe Street, on Monday afternoon to Strathroy cemetery. Revs Neelands and McKibbin conducted the services. The pallbearers were John Emmons, W. F. Cameron, George Scott, George Long, Charles Campbell and Anthony Pyatt. Deceased leaves a widow and four children to mourn his loss. One son is in the States, William and Charles reside in Strathroy. The daughter lives with relatives in Enniskillen."

Ontario, Canada

The Province of Upper Canada was separated from the Province of Quebec in 1791 to create a colony that was subject to English law and the protestant Church of England as opposed to the remainder, which became the Province of Lower Canada, subject to French civil law and with an extablished Roman Catholic church.

As a result of the revolts in 1837 against the established administrations in both Lower and Upper Canada the two colonies were merged in 1841 by the Act of Union (1840).  Formally the western province was Canada West, although most people continued to refer to it as Upper Canada.

This entry is used retrospectively for events occuring in the colony of Upper Canada from its founding in 1791 to its merger into the Colony of Canada as Canada West in 1841, and for events occuring in Canada West from 1841 to Confederation in 1867 when it became the province of Ontario within the Dominion of Canada. This is consistent with the way that events are described in official documents such as censuses recorded after 1867.
