? Help William Couban (about 22 Jun 1724—)

William Couban1 was the son of William Couban and Jean Couban. He was also known as William Coban. 2He was born about 22 June 1724 at Inchkeil, Duffus, Morayshire, Scotland. He was christened on 24 June 1724 at Inchkeil, Duffus, Morayshire, Scotland. He died at Roseisle, Duffus, Morayshire, Scotland.

Notes: William was born in the village of Inchkeil on the road between Burghead and Elgin about a kilometre south-east of the "College" of Roseisle. His baptism was witnessed by William Sutherland of Roshaugh, William Sinclair, Mrs Henrda[sic] Sutherland, and Marjory Mitchel. After marriage William and Margaret settled in Roseisle, where all of their children were born. At this time, as shown in the 1749 map of the estate, the village of Roseisle was located near the current Westbank farm on the south-west end of Tappoch Hill. It was separated from the College of Roseisle, 500m to the south, by the marshy head of Loch Spynie, a shallow arm of Moray Firth. The origin of the term "College" of Roseisle is uncertain. It may mean no more than the literal "gathering", although it is possible that at some time during the middle ages there was a small religious establishment there. In 1773 the Duke of Gordon commissioned a reorganization of the Roseisle estate into larger, unified, farms. The village of Roseisle was moved 500m north to what is now called "Old town". Some of the tenants remained on the enlarged farms, but many were relocated to the new planned villages of Cummingston and Hopetown along the coast.

He married Margaret Scot on 13 October 1750 at Duffus, Morayshire, Scotland. 3

Margaret Scot was the daughter of William Scot and Helen Simson. She was born about 13 October 1723 at Keam, Duffus, Morayshire, Scotland. She was christened on 15 October 1723 at Duffus, Morayshire, Scotland.

Notes: Margaret was born at Keam Farm just south of the village of Inverugie and about a mile east of Roseisle over the hill of Tappoch. Margaret's baptism was witnessed by Thomas Sutherland, Alex Murdock, Mary Rob/Ross, and Mary Sandison.
