Jane Benjafield (um 1808—4 November 1892)

Jane Benjafield hat keine Eltern eingetragen. Sie war auch bekannt als Jean Bengifield. Sie war auch bekannt als Jane Bengy. Sie wurde geboren um 1808 at Somersetshire, England .1,2,3,4 Sie hat im 1871 at Southwold, Elgin, ON, CA gelebt.5 Sie hat with son Silas Toles im 1881 at Southwold, Elgin, ON, CA gelebt.6 Sie hat with son Joseph Wilton im 1891 at Aldborough, Elgin, ON, CA gelebt.7 Sie had a medical condition of duration 4 months, Dr. D.F.Webster, , . Sie starb auf 4 November 1892 old age at Aldborough, Elgin, ON, CA .8 Die Todesursache war old age .

Notes: Jane was probably born in April or May of 1808, assuming that she always gave her age accurately in official documents. When William Wilton died he left a pregnant widow, Jane, to raise their young children. In 1851 Jane was married to Silas Toles. Her sons William and Joseph by her first husband, her son Silas by Silas Toles, and his two sons James and John were living with them, as was also John's wife Jane and daughter Margaret. Joanne Reive has a picture of the two half brothers William N Wilton and Silas Toles together as youths. In 1871 Jane was already a widow for the second time (1871 census Southwold part 4 page 21). Only her son Silas was living with her then. In 1891 Jane was living with her son Joseph in Aldborough township. He is the witness on her death register so she probably died at his home. The surname is probably Benjafield, a family from Somerset which is still extant in Elgin county.

Sie verheiratet William Wilton after 1830 at Somersetshire, England .

William Wilton war der Sohn von John Wilton und Sybil Cary. Er wurde geboren auf 12 Dezember 1797 at Bruton, Somerset, England .9 Er wurde getauft auf 26 Dezember 1797 at Bruton Parish Church, Bruton, Somerset, England .10 Er wanderte um 1836 nach aus at Upper Canada, Canada .11 Er starb auf 17 Dezember 1844 at St Thomas, ON, CA .12 Er wurde begraben at Old English Churchyard, St Thomas, ON, CA .

Notes: Martha Dunn, who died in 1830, was William's first wife and the mother of his eldest three children. William apparently emigrated to Canada about 1834 with his brother. William Nelson Wilton and his wife Jane Bengy(field) Wilton and their children also settled in Yarmouth Township. Two baptisms, those of Hannah and Sivil were the only baptisms in this family which have been found in Bruton to date. Sivil/Sybil changed her name to Isabella. (Ose) Joseph is listed as being born in Warwickshire in his marriage information. In Ontario the children were baptized at the St. Peter's Anglican Church, Tryconnell, ON. (Check how many??) It is known that William Nelson Wilton Jr. was. The Yarmouth Township Census, 1841-2 contains a listing for a William Wilton household on Concession 10, East North West. Unfortunately in this census names were not given. There appears to be no separate listing for a John Wilton family in this census. In this census William Wilton was listed as a farmer, a non-proprietor of real property, and was entitled to vote. 11 members were listed in the family, 5 of whom belonged to the church of England; 8 were natives of England, 3 were natives of Canada, and 5 children were in school. They had been in the province 6 years, suggesting arrival in 1836, and kept 2 cows, 10 sheep, and 3 pigs. In this family it was the father who died first. William Nelson Wilton died just before Christmas and was buried December 17, 1844, at age 47 years, in the Old English Churchyard (St. Thomas' Church), St. Thomas Village. There is no record of his burial. Family tradition indicates that when the Trinity Church was built in 1877, replacing the old St. Thomas' Church, it was built on top of several graves of which William Nelson Wilton's grave was one. The family did not have the money to have his grave moved. [Ross William Wilton] No stone marks his grave nor is there any official record of his burial in the St. thomas Church Cemetery Records. He married twice in England. The records of this family in Bruton stop with the baptism of Joseph Wilton in November 1833.

Notes: From the Toles Family Cemetery transcription by the Elgin County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society: "Silas Toles ,,, fought in the war of 1812 - 1814 and was wounded at the Battle of Lundy’s Lane, and was on the field at Queenston Heights when General Brock was killed. Toles was given the land in Southwold for his services in that war. He eloped with Margaret Kelley of Niagara Falls in 1813 and came to St. Thomas. They built a house on the Wellington Road hill in 1814. Silas and Margaret had ten children. When Margaret died Silas remarried, this time to Jane Benjafield Wilton, a widow with a grown family also. She was an English woman who migrated to Canada in 1834. When John, Silas’ oldest son married, the house and land were given to him by his father who then built another house slightly to the west and north of the original house. It was an especially fine structure furnished throughout with black walnut. "Silas Toles and Captain Shore were friends and close neighbours. Mr. Toles had one of the first orchards in the locality and he and Captain Shore enjoyed many a glass of cider together. "The Silas Toles house was torn down after his death and the walnut wood was removed. The John Toles house was sold later to William Dodd who lived there for many years. A few years ago the Toles family held reuniona at the original Toles home and they erected an inscribed boulder on the family plot on the hilltop where Silas Toles and his first wife were buried."

Ontario, Canada

The Province of Upper Canada was separated from the Province of Quebec in 1791 to create a colony that was subject to English law and the protestant Church of England as opposed to the remainder, which became the Province of Lower Canada, subject to French civil law and with an established Roman Catholic church.

As a result of the revolts in 1837 against the established administrations in both Lower and Upper Canada the two colonies were merged in 1841 by the Act of Union (1840).  Formally the western province was Canada West, although most people continued to refer to it as Upper Canada.

This entry is used retrospectively for events occuring in the colony of Upper Canada from its founding in 1791 to its merger into the Colony of Canada as Canada West in 1841, and for events occuring in Canada West from 1841 to Confederation in 1867 when it became the province of Ontario within the Dominion of Canada. This is consistent with the way that events are described in official documents such as censuses recorded after 1867.
