Ellen Fenwick (about 1835—5 Feb 1892)

Ellen Fenwick1,2,3,4 was the daughter of James Fenwick and Margaret Goldrick. She was born about 1835 in Ontario, Canada. 5,6 She died on 5 February 1892 at Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. 1 She was buried at Longwood Cemetery, Melbourne, Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. 1

Notes: She appears as Helen Fenwick in the 1852 census of Caradoc (div. 2 page 2).

She married Job Marshman between 1852 and 1860 at Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA.

Job Marshman was the son of James Marshman and Catherine Rodgers. He was born on 24 November 1833 at Wiltshire, England. 7,8,9,10 He worked as a Farmer in 1851 at lot 8 con 1, Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. 11 He worked as a Farmer from 1861 to 1871 at lot 8 1RS, Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. 12,5 He worked as a Farmer from 1881 to 1891 at Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. He lived in 1901 at Dutton, Dunwich, Elgin, ON, CA. 13 He lived with his son-in-law George Tanner in 1911 at Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. 14 He died on 27 January 1912 Prostatitis, 8 days at Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. 15,16 The cause of death was Prostatitis, 8 days . He was buried at Longwood Cemetery, Melbourne, Caradoc, Middlesex, ON, CA. 1

Notes: Job settled in lot 9 concession 2 of Caradoc township in 1850. In the 1851 census he appears with a Simon or Simeon Marshman who is 12 years older and possibly an uncle or a brother from a previous marriage, since he is 21 years younger than Job's father but only 7 years younger than Job's mother. A George Marshman, 2 years older than Job and presumably a brother, followed, arriving in 1852. In 1871 and 1878 Job was farming in lot 8 1st range south of Longwoods Road next to his father and mother. In 1881 a widow, Catherine Marshman, presumably Job's mother, was living with him.

Ontario, Canada

The Province of Upper Canada was separated from the Province of Quebec in 1791 to create a colony that was subject to English law and the protestant Church of England as opposed to the remainder, which became the Province of Lower Canada, subject to French civil law and with an extablished Roman Catholic church.

As a result of the revolts in 1837 against the established administrations in both Lower and Upper Canada the two colonies were merged in 1841 by the Act of Union (1840).  Formally the western province was Canada West, although most people continued to refer to it as Upper Canada.

This entry is used retrospectively for events occuring in the colony of Upper Canada from its founding in 1791 to its merger into the Colony of Canada as Canada West in 1841, and for events occuring in Canada West from 1841 to Confederation in 1867 when it became the province of Ontario within the Dominion of Canada. This is consistent with the way that events are described in official documents such as censuses recorded after 1867.
