Cumberland, England

Cumberland was one of the last areas of British resistance to the Anglo-Saxon conquest of Britain.  It was part of the Kingdom of Rheged which was absorbed by Northumbria in the 7th century.   It was part of Scotland until conquered by William II.  The county of Cumberland was merged with Westmorland and the city of Carlisle into the county of Cumbria in 1974.
