Notes: In family records he is recorded by the name Talmadge, however in the 1881 census he is recorded as Merrit. As a boy he was run over by a cart at the race track at the Strathroy Fair. He spent nine months recovering in the hospital. This accident left him lame. After graduating he worked in a country store for 50 cents per day. Then he moved to Pontiac, MI, where he worked as a maintenance engineer at the Pontiac Asylum. After he married he moved back to Caradoc, but in 1909 they decided to go to Alberta to join his uncle Thomas Wilton. They arrived at Innisfail, Albert, and heard of a store and post office for sale at Knee Hill Valley, 17 miles to the east. They operated this store and invited his brother Roly to come west and form a partnership in the store business. He accepted and came west as a single man. His brother Alf and his wife Viny came to Knee Hill Valley and broke up a lot of farm land. They had to haul their freight up from Innisfail, as the CPR only ran between Calgary and Edmonton at this time. In 1910, at the time of his mother's death, he and his brother Roland, were living in Kneehill Valley, Alberta. A couple of years later Talmage decided to buy a store that was for sale at Huxley, about 38 miles further east. The railway was not yet through there either, and they had to haul their belongings on a drag bed with a team of horses. When the CNR was being built he supplied the food to the work camps as men built the railway bed, graded it up, and laid the track. Huxley had a population of about 50 and is not much bigger today. Talmage took on brothers Les and Jean Roache as partners. They bought him out a couple of years later when the war broke out and he wanted to return to Knee Hill Valley in 1914. In 1917 he heard about a store for sale at Alix and he went to look it over. He bought this big store from Herb Johnson who helped him for a while until he got acquainted with the customers. He kept the clerk, Miss Edith Sims and hired a man by the name of Bill Fiander. Siz Andrews owned a printing press next to his father's store. When he first went to Alix he stayed at a boarding house across from the Alix Hotel, run by Mrs. Garrett. The rest of the family moved up once school was finished. They were taken by Alf and Viny in an old model T car to the railroad at Huxley. In 1939, at the time of his brother Arthur's death, he was living in Alix Alberta. He stayed there until 1942.
