Capital city of Ontario since 1793.  The boundaries of the city have changed many times.  See Historical Maps of Toronto.

This territory was controlled by the Wendat until they were driven out by the Iroquois about 1650.  The Mississauga tribe of Anishnaabe moved down into the territory when the surviving Wendat relocated to Québec and occupied most of southern Ontario during the 18th century.  The French established Fort Rouillé guarding the entrance to the harbour in 1850 which was replaced by the British Fort York after the Seven Years War.  The Town of York was established at the head of the harbour near the mouth of the Don River.  It was incorporated as the City of Toronto in 1834.
